SESSION 1 | 2 DECEMBER 2021

AGILE LEADERSHIP 2.0+

How do you build an agile and resilient business by applying a new leadership model? What competencies do leaders need today?

JUSTIN MATJEWSKI

A former brigadier in the British Army, he is a consultant to McKinsey & Company. He was awarded the Order of Outstanding Service for commanding the 800-strong Second Land Forces Battalion The Rifles in Iraq. At McKinsey & Company, he led projects supporting private, public and third sector clients in large-scale change and development, focusing on corporate strategy, planning, implementation and leadership. He was a visiting professor at the University of Oxford, co-authored a book on the British Army's campaigns of the last twenty years, conducted research and participated in many seminars.

Session description

What can leaders and their teams learn from the army? It turns out, a lot! Just like on the battlefield in a business environment, we face uncertainty, incomplete information and sudden changes, and our people need a strong leader. So what lessons from the army are useful for business, and how can they be implemented in an organization?

The experience of the British military has proven that today simply giving orders and setting tasks is not enough - leaders must appeal to purpose and context if they want to engage teams in making the right decisions and perpetuate proactive attitudes. What leadership competencies and attitudes should the new leadership model be based on?

Through this session you will learn:

Why does business transformation in the new normal 2.0+ require new leadership models?
What inspiration and solutions can leaders take from top military and military commanders?
Military patterns of leaders' attitudes and behaviors - what do they consist of and how can we easily adapt them?
Today's battlefield vs. today's business environment - what lessons can leaders learn in the context of operating in high uncertainty and with incomplete information?
How can leaders simultaneously reconcile operational consistency with agility and adaptability?
What qualities of a leader are needed to operate effectively in the new world?
How to overcome the conflict between command and control? Why is it worth it if you want to be a better leader?
Teams of a new type - what kind of people are they made of and what is their role?
